Our Residential Services Lead Libby Darcy recently participated in the Master Class Series on Tenant-led Practices in Disability Housing at the Housing Hub.
Congratulations to the Housing Hub on a really well planned and delivered session. Learnings from this session were shared with our Destination Accessible team to help us improve our processes and planning in accessible STR and shared living (SIL) home design, layout and tenant relationships.
The training was all about putting the person with the disability at the centre to inform design and processes. It included interesting presentations from NDIS participants and family members who had shaped their own SDA designs/builds as well as hearing from a national SDA provider on best practice processes for managing SDAs and tenant retention.
Libby said it was interesting gain further insight into just how important it is to tap into the knowledge and experience of the people with disability we support. “I’m keen to see how we can apply this to further improve the functionality of Destination Accessible’s homes. One of the takeaways for me from NDIS participant /SDA self builder Tom Butler – was to not let function overwhelm form and how clever design results in an accessible home which doesn’t stand apart as disability housing. His test to people without a disability was to ask the question: would you live there?
Destination Accessible’s homes include new as well as renovated and modified older homes located in central Geelong and Ocean Grove – View Homes
